NEWS: UK rap pioneer Derek B dies

Derek B, one of the first UK rap artists to achieve any degree of commercial success, has died of a heart attack, aged 44. Many fellow artists and DJs from the hip-hop world reported his death early via an array of Twitter updates, among them Estelle, Rodney P, Shy FX and Gilles Peterson. The BBC later confirmed the news.

Born in 1965, Derek B was one of the first British rap artists to achieve commercial success. He scored hits in the late 80s with tracks such as 'Bad Young Brother', 'Get Down' and 'Good Groove'. Along with contemporaries such as The Cookie Crew, Silver Bullet, The Demon Boyz and The London Posse, he is credited with having laid the foundations for a UK hip-hop scene, and help bring the music to the attention of the masses.
