NEWS: BBC places its bets on the stars of 2010

Simon Cowell isn’t the only one searching for new talent. The BBC is also on the look out for fresh faces with their longlist for its Sound of 2010 poll. The yearly competition, designed to highlight new musical talent for the coming year, features a number of prominent urban artists.

Urban front runners Devlin and Giggs join the likes of Daisy Dares You, Delphic, The Drums, Everything Everything, Gold Panda, Ellie Goulding, Hurts, Joy Orbison, Marina & the Diamonds, Owl City, Rox, Stornoway and Two Door Cinema Club. A panel of 165 UK based music experts, which includes Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe, Dermot O’Leary and NME editor Krissi Murrison, were asked to submit a list of three upcoming artists they felt showed the most potential.

The panel submitted their choices based on strict criteria. The artists could be performers of any description, including bands, singers and MCs. They must not have had a previous top 20 single or album and could be from any musical genre and from any country. X Factor and American Idol contestants were strictly forbidden. This is the eighth year of the BBC’s Sound of competition, and previous winners have gone on to major chart success. That list includes Little Boots, Adele, Keane and 50 Cent.

The top five will be announced in reverse order on the week beginning January 4 and the winner will be revealed on the January 8. They will be revealed on the BBC news website and on 6 Music, where they will perform live tracks on Lauren Laverne’s show.
