REVIEW: London Stand Up - Urban Honours & Awards 2009, Friday, July 3rd 2009

Eastside Stories’ first award show was a celebration of all that is good about urban music in 2009. The team of young event managers cooked up an incredible evening of live performance and honours for three great artists from the urban music scene. Whistles fuelled the indoor carnival atmosphere, as fans prepared for the show to commence.

Plush red curtains drew back and Vortex dance crew emerged from the smoke and shadows to raptous applause. The energy in their routine seared through the stands to kick-start an evening of great showmanship. Hosts, Kamarl and Izzy kept the tempo up to welcome Ms D to stage. Her song captured the essence of soul and jazz, giving birth to a faultless crowd pleaser, ‘Shopping’.

African warrior, Fola was next to grace the stage. ‘Me Or Him’ was a charmingly poised R&B song and dance performance driven be a choice production of auto-tuned vocals. Female threesome the Bradyz followed to keep the revellers entertained with their pitch perfect harmony and hip perfect movement. It was more than enough to win over crowd in a choice between the three R&B acts.

The night proceeded, as the hosts announced the hip hop segment of the show. First of the emcee’s was Londoner Grhymey. His name may suggest otherwise, but ‘Who’s That’ was a hip hop ‘style’ statement, proclaiming his presence and boasting his lyrical aptitude. The atmospheric hype was only heightened by JP. He didn’t let the stage boundaries limit his enthusiasm, as he strode off stage and through the stands, calling to ‘Put The Knives Down’.

The dance crews upped tempos and heart rates during their round. Kurupt and Abyss embodied discipline and originality in their creative composition. Despite their efforts, three man squad Liez secured victory, infusing a more sensual sequence to their already attention grabbing choreography. Even the whistle-less women were significantly roused to let out high-pitched screams.

The show paused on a good note and drinks were poured as audience members talked of the artists they anticipated to be honoured post interval. The trailer promo for the event may have been more than a hint but there was an air of excitement, as nothing was written in stone.

After resettling, spectators were geared up again by a producer battle. The fashion show that followed sweetened viewers with eye candy for males and females. The IFE models showcased an eye-catching array of attire like true professionals.

Eastside Stories CEO, Wezley Coshare, stepped on stage to cut the suspense as he initiated the presentation of honours. His introduction teased the audience with telling hints until the last moment, as Shola Ama (pictured) appeared on stage, to the delight of the crowd. Her soulful set and masterful vocals reminding those gathered why she is a true UK R&B pioneer.

Ghetts

As attention turned to ‘Contribution to Grime’, Stratford Circus regulars and grime fans had a fair idea of what was about to happen next. As the videography faded out, an amped-up Ghetts emerged to collect his golden plaque awarded with the Grime honour. He rapped street anthem ‘Don’t Phone Me’ to applause, with Griminal emerging from the wings to “switch!” things up.

To conclude, UK rap star Giggs picked up the Hip Hop honour. The multitude of fans packed inside the venue knew the lines word for word. He called on Ms Ama for an exclusive performance of ‘Cut Above The Rest’ before tearing the roof down with ‘Talkin The Hardest’.

Merit to Fusion, Wezley and the Eastside Stories team for creating an event that was a true credit to home talent and accomplishment.
