REVIEW: Industry Takeover All-Day Seminar & Showcase, March 6th

Rich Mix in east London played host to this year’s Industry Takeover All-Day Seminar & Showcase, on Saturday, 6th March 2010. Urban Development teamed up with the up-and-coming cross arts center to takeover the building with a fresh collective of artists, stallholders and guest speakers.

Urban Development is one of the few pioneering organisations that cultivates new urban talent, professional development and live events. Their essential one-day event was the talk of the town and boasted an assortment of activities, providing hundreds of young people with indispensable knowledge about the creative industries.

Market stalls bustled on the ground and first floor of Rich Mix, selling the freshest wears from Justin Hustlin, Down Wid It and Universoul Clothing, and offering services courtesy of UK Music, Music4Good, Kdot, DV8 Training, Continental Drifts and many more.

Partner organisations Rising Tide, Bigga Fish, The I Feel Experience and Streetlife FM delivered workshops on the day to enlighten attendees with advice in marketing, performance, radio, fashion, producing and... well... just about everything.

This year’s showcase line-up featured Master Shortie, the self-made 80’s electro-hop emcee. Singer Ny also graced the stage with her angelic voice and lifted the audience with gems like the Wookie-produced ‘Fallin’ Again’. Sherelle McKenzie masterfully led the UDVC chorus line, Princess Nyah, Mz Bratt and Tribal Man got the funky massive moving and open mic champ Roxanne dropped some impromptu big bars. Avid followers of grime were in for a treat when surprise guests Wretch 32, Ghetts and Griminal bombarded the stage and (literally) drenched the audience with water, sick beats and bars. By the time Ghetts let loose with a live premier of ‘Destruction Of The Effiel’, all eyes, mobile phones and cameras were firmly focused on centre stage.

A dance-off, hosted by MC Versatile, performances from emerging stars Hammer, Bex, Chockz, Leanne Robinson, English, Shivz Dot and a flutter of open mic talent rounded up all the action on the main stage.

The day also included a screening of highly acclaimed Kidulthood/Adulthood actor, Femi Oyeniran’s witty short film, Fresh Off The Boat. If that’s not enough, Industry Takeover hosted several seminars will an omniscient panel of journalists, DJ’s, artists and producers including Ras Kwame, Chantelle Fiddy, Miranda Cooper, Hattie Collins, Posty (Grime Daily) and Terror Danjah.

Urban Development is defiantly one to watch if you want to be in the know about music, media and the freshest urban talent. Their Industry Takeover initiative is spreading like wildfire amongst industry professionals and enthusiasts. Who knows, attending one of their events might just be the catalyst for your career!
