Paying homage to rhythm and blues veterans of the past, John Legend & The Roots preformed an exclusive medley of soulful serenades from their collaborative album: Wake Me Up. Held at the world-renowned Maida Vale studios, renditions reminiscent of greats such as Sam Cooke, Marvin Gay, Curtis Mayfield and others were exclusively recorded for a Radio 1Xtra broadcast. 

Often commended for his intrepid approach to relationships, current affairs and politics through music; Legend’s interests are evident in his alliance with The Roots for Wake Me Up. Epitomising an era of protests, angst and inspiration; several tracks including Hard Times (which he preformed) are an ode to the civil rights movement during the 1960’s and 70’s of America. 

Keeping with the theme of empowerment, Shine lit up the room with its empowering lyrics and connotations. Comparable to African American gospel, the uplifting track talked about enabling individuals to pursue their dreams.

As anticipated, Legend preformed Ordinary People, finally giving the audience a chance to appreciate some of his personal material. His rendition had all in awe, the lick of every lyric provoking impulsive sways in the crowd. Initially introduced as an acoustic performance, the song cresendoed in complex riffs accompanied by ?uestlove’s skilful drumming. Filling the ridges of every ear with dulcet tones of delight, John Legend reaffirmed himself as exactly that, a true legend. 

 His ability to dissect established classics yet reinterpret them with the same emotion and in their original state make John Legend a commendable artist. 

Everybody wake up – real music is back.
