REVIEW: Kele Le Roc 'Been There Done That' Mixtape
One of the legends of the UK Garage scene, Kele Le Roc has come back stating that she’s been there and done that whilst showing that she is talented in many more musical genres than garage. The 20 track mixtape, a collection of songs Kele has recorded throughout her career, features collaborations with Tinie Tempah, Estelle, Lethal B, Sticky, Davinche, Caspa and more.
"You can’t help but appreciate the serenity of Kele’s voice."
If you thought Kele Le Roc was a one hit wonder with ‘My Love’, then this mixtape will soon make you realise this misconception. As the most recognised song Kele has recorded it’s not surprising that ‘My Love’ is the first track on the mixtape, but with the less commercially known Ignorant’s Remix.
Listening further you can’t help but appreciate the serenity of Kele’s voice; chances are you’ll find yourself drifting off to her smooth tones, hypnotized by the melodies. ‘Bring It’ is an infectious funk number that many wouldn’t dare attempt, but Kele graciously pulls it off. ‘Something About You’ featuring Tinie Tempah is a girl-boy ballad of the same nature, seen on a few occasions, with grime emcees on Channel AKA. However, it’s suprising why this is know a more more widely known track as it’s easy to imagine this being a favourite amongst the adolescent females.

On ‘Let Me Know’ Kele Le Roc takes us back to the familiar place of nineties RnB. Many say music isn’t like the good old days but this is definitely that. All the components are there - the kick, the snare, the basic bassline and effortless chords are wrapped together within a simply structured verse, bridge and chorus. ‘Let Me Know’ is for anybody who’s been having withdrawals from that classic nineties RnB sound.
Not one to leave her dance roots behind ‘Back For The First Time’ produced by Caspa is one of those songs you would throw your hands in the air in appreciation as every sound passes through your ear drums, making your head bounce uncontrollably. ‘Back For The First Time’ should have been released and is undoubtedly my favourite track on the mixtape.
One thing is for sure, Kele Le Roc definitely proves that she’s been there, done that n this mixtape. Quality.
