PROFILE: Kobi Onyame shares his hunger for the game

Born on the 3rd of July 1982 in Accra, Ghana, Kobi Onyame (born Kwame Barfour-Osei) moved to England at the tender age of 1. At the age of 7 he relocated with his family to Ghana. During his early years in Ghana he drew musical inspiration from the likes of Lords of the Underground, Naughty by Nature, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre and Kris Kross. Till this day, he says these groups influenced him with their musical style, image, lyrical content and beats. His other musical influences include Jay-Z, Notorious BIG, Common, Kanye West, Panji Anoff, Kwaku T and Talib Kweli.

It was not until he moved back to the UK that his hunger for musical success and recognition began to receive major fuelling. At the age of 14, he started writing songs and taught himself the art of cutting and sampling on PC program, Cool Edit - this was the beginning of the inner producer. He only started to rap himself because he found it hard to find other young emcees in his area to rhyme over his beats.

Music has always been a medium of self expression and a means of escaping some of the harsh realities of life. He always expresses his feelings whether bad or good through his beats and lyrical content and considers his form of hip hop to be very eclectic, with influences from his multicultural upbringing in Ghana and the UK.

Returning to Ghana in 1999 to attend the prestigious University of Ghana, he was one of the founding members of the Ghanaian hip hop crew, The Haatsville Project. The group consisted of fellow artists, Myth Ankasa, Jay So, Skratch, The Canz and others. The Haatsville Project has gone on to birth the existence of the dominant hip hop crew in Ghana in the name of Jay So & the Skillions; the premier recording house in Ghana with Ebuzu Media Services and crews like the Canz (Atlanta based hip hop duo) and of course Kobi Onyame himself flying the flag high.

His new club banger "Who You Know" is receiving major support at national radio level in Ghana at YFM and Joy FM (DJ Black, DJ Blackboy & others) and featured on DJ Black's current mix tape. The single is also being strongly supported by DJ Shortee Blitz at Kiss FM in the UK with Shortee Blitz giving it a 4/5 ratings review in I-DJ Magazine and including it on his Kiss FM Mix tape.

Still unsigned and independent, he released his first CD "Unsigned & Hungry Vol. 1" (released under his initial stage name "Jae P") in early 2008 through local label SoulJawn Records and his 8182 Recordings imprint. On a very limited budget, the album received credible reviews in magazines like The Source (received a Source Advertorial in May 2008); The Skinny UK (4/5); Hip Hop Connection Magazine UK (4/5); the List and more. It also received support at specialist radio at BBC Radio 1Xtra, Kiss FM, Choice, BBC Radio 1, Galaxy FM, Joy FM (Ghana), YFM (Ghana) and more. However, lack of label support meant the album did not give him the awareness he had initially intended and failed to reach mainstream UK national radio level. Later in 2008, he rebranded himself as Kobi Onyame.

To date, Kobi Onyame has played live in several cities including Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee, Liverpool, London, Perth and Accra (Ghana). He has opened and shared the bill with other artists including Kanye West, Akon, Slum Village, Platinum Pied Pipers, Sway, Wiley, TQ, The Pharcyde, De La Soul, Memphis Bleek and more. He has also played at MTV Base's ILUVLIVE which showcases the cream of UK's unsigned and signed urban artists.

2009 opens a new window for Kobi Onyame. He is reworking on songs from his "Unsigned & Hungry" project and new material for a new album "A Possible Strength In An Actual Weakness" for later on in the year.

New projects also include a mix tape project with DJ Shortee Blitz of KISS FM UK.
