LIVE REVIEW: OMAR TAMES THE CIRCUS

The fire had been kindled earlier that night by up and coming acoustic act Randolph Matthews (who treated the crowd to spiritualized offerings from his mini-album) and later fanned by R&B newcomer Lee Henry (whose R&B vibes wowed the crowd and had them clapping along). By the time hosts Fusion and Janelle finished working the Stratford Circus massive, with their playful banter, the scene was set for the main attraction.

Omar's organic mix of acoustic soul, Soca, R&B and jazz was potent. Soul survivors reminisced; younger converts caught the groove and the London legend proved why he is a name held in high esteem by the likes of Erykah Badu and Common. Omar commanded the stage with masterful ease, leading his tight live band from behind his keyboard. Later in the set he performed with old friend and respected soul singer Don-E; together they gave an inspired rendition of William DeVaughn's classic 'Be Thankful'.

Crowd pleasers on the night included early 90s UK soul classic 'There's Nothing Like This', Omar's rendition of Roy Ayres' 'Everybody Loves The Sunshine' and a sly salute to John Coltrane's 'A Love Supreme'; the hypnotic masterpiece stretching to accommodate each band members' solo excursions.

Omar also showed fans how blessed the Lyefook bloodline is when it comes to musical talent. Sharing the spotlight with his sister, who sang a moving accapella, and his brother Scratch Professor who waxed lyrical, Omar truly made the xmas showcase a family affair.

After 40mins of soulful enchantment fans were prepared for the magical mystery ride to come to an end. Only the absence of one or two classics gave hope for an encore. Egged on by the two hosts Omar returned one more time and he didn?t disappoint.
