PROFILE: MICHAEL LAWRENCE

I started my career at Luton Students Union as an Events Manager after completing my Degree in Marketing (at Luton uni). After 3 great years it was time to finally move on after working on many successful events, such as the Biggest Student Ball of its time with over 6000 students @ Batchwood Hall.

I then worked for Bradford students Union before moving onto Sheffield Students union where i transformed their mainstream club nights into 3 very successful brand nights which are still running to date.

Although my first love was planning and arranging events, i wanted to work closer with the acts that i was booking, and decided to take a leap of faith and make a career switch, that i believed would help me get into organising bigger live gigs quicker.

I spoke to an agent who worked with the X factor and Britain’s got talent acts and he gave me a job. I quickly realised that because of my love and passion for music that this was a natural transition and got the bug to be a fully fledged agent. The only problem was i wanted to work with acts that i had more of an interest in. So i started to speak to agencies that had rosters (acts) that i liked.

This lead me to another small agency who had a reputation of working with urban acts like so solid and roll deep etc. There i was able to start building my own client list after working with Ironik, Chipmunk, Tinchy, Crazy Cousinz, and Mz Bratt. I decided that this was the gene that i was most comfortable in and decided to make a career out of being an agent.

Word started to spread within the industry between acts and management that i specialised with the urban artists and that i had a long term interest within this genre rather than just wanting to earn my commission and go home. This coupled with the emergence of acts such as Tinchy and Chipmunk into the mainstream. It wasn’t long before i was Head Hunted by Coda Music agency to work specifically on the urban market with my own exclusive acts that i had built up since becoming an agent.
