CELEBRITY INTERVIEW: Yasmin (Finish Line - Out Now)
Here at Urban Development we couldn’t exactly get to the Finish Line as fast as Yasmin can so we set up a cheeky chat with the stylish singer about her top ten hit, being mistaken for Eliza Doolittle not once but twice, who she fancies and what amazing eyeliner she uses.

Hi Yasmin! Congratulations on your current top ten with Finish Line! How does it feel
It’s exciting, can’t really describe it because it’s not like you get a certificate or anything but it’s still very exciting. I’m still waiting for it to sink in!
Can you tell us what are you working on at the moment?
Just finished the album, been doing a lot of recordings and shows, getting ready for festival season! I’m doing like all the festivals; Glastonbury, Wireless, Radio 1's One Big Weekend on Sunday which I’m really excited about!
Have you been working with any big names?
I was in New York doing some recording over there with Diplo, I’ve worked with the Freemasons, they remixed Finish Line and we also did some original material too. I don’t usually work with songwriters because I’m really stubborn, but I met my favourite songwriter ever, Andrea Martin and I got to work with her on a song. That was really exciting!
You recently toured with Chase & Status, what was that like?
Yeah it was really intensive! Their music is made to be played really loud and live, it was tough opening for them because their fan base are so ready to mosh, so warming them up was difficult. I’m so glad I did it because it was an experience to watch them perform every night and now I feel like I can do anything.
That’s girl power! In your recent videos you have been looking stylish! Who inspires you fashion-wise?
There’s not one in-particular person, I get inspired by so many different things. I like things that are comfortable, and I love jewellery, I always need cool jewellery – my favourite designer is Maria Francesca Pepe. Her stuff is amazing.
We’ve also noticed your eyeliner is always on point. What one do you use?
My eyeliner? [Laughs] I use Urban Decay, it’s a brush with a pot, and they do all different colours but I just use the black one. It’s so easy to put on so that one is the one for me!

I’ll be popping to the shops soon. What are you listening to at the moment?
At the moment I’m listening to this act called The Weeknd from Toronto, they have a mixtape called ‘House Of Balloons’, they’re really good! I’m listening to Ed Sheeran – Collaboration EP, that hasn’t left my iPod for awhile, I love that and I love Ed! Also, Ellie Goulding and Kanye West’s latest albums.
Have you ever been mistaken for another female artist by a fan?
When I was supporting Eliza Doolittle I remember a photographer asking to take a picture of me and then saying ‘Thank You Eliza’, I was like ‘I’m not Eliza’. Another date a guy came up to me to sign a photo and it was of Eliza Doolittle.
How much say do you have in your music videos because they seem to really suit you?
I have like every say, because I’m such a control freak and I’m really stubborn. I don’t like the idea of somebody else controlling the way I look or stand, so yeah, I have quite a big say. My style is constantly changing and I’m more edgy now. My first two videos were girly and soft, but my next one will have much more attitude. I’m not a perfect product and through my videos you get to watch me evolve in front of your eyes and show the different sides to me.
Can you tell us about the Young Guns music video with Ed Sheeran, Devlin and Griminal?
Last year we had a photoshoot for i-D Magazine, the theme of the issue was up-and-coming artists, after we did the shoot we all went to the studio and made the song randomly with the energy of us all being young and doing our thing. Because we’ve all been so busy we only shot the video the other day, it’s directed by Carly Cussen, whose amazing and it looks incredible, so it should be out in the next couple weeks!
Sounds exciting! So, lets be cheeky, do you fancy anyone right now?
Um. I love the guy in the new Lady Gaga video, he’s called Rick Gonzalez. Hot!
Agreed. The media were suggesting that you and Tinie Tempah were seeing each other, how do you feel about that?
It’s just the nature of the beast. At the end of the day I’m just friends with Tinie, the same way I’m just friends Calvin Harris. Calvin lives with a bunch of my friends and I visited the house not too long ago, then I done an interview and they said ‘Oh, so why were you at Calvin Harris’ house?’ Um, because he’s my friend. It is what is, you take the good with the bad. I’m getting really good at learning not to care, so it’s all good.

Yasmin will be performing on Sunday at Radio 1s Big Weekend! Catch her there or keep up-to-date with her via her twitter. www.twitter.com/itsYasmin or her website www.yasminsworld.co.uk! Buy Finish Line from iTunes now!
