How To Steal My Job: Music Promotion
Having worked within the world of music and the creative industries since the age of 15, from helping run art exhibitions and events, through to working at Fabric Nightclub, writing for music publications and DJing in clubs and on radio, Alex Rogers eventually found a secure role within music PR. First through work experience, into full time employment and now running his own company AYK (All Young Kings). Rogers has ran promo campaigns for everyone from Skream to Amy Winehouse to Wiley and Flying Lotus. Here’s his top ten tips to stealing his job.
1) Experience
You can read every theory book in the world, qualify from every college course that exists - and I encourage everyone to do so, academic education is important - but nothing is more valid than genuine hands on experience with a reputable company. I've got over 13 years of experience in various roles within the creative industries, there's no certificate to prove it just a reputation amongst my peers and those who work within the fields I'm involved in.
2) Be open minded
Nobody likes a smart arse - trust me. Ignorance will get you nowhere in life. You think you know about everything and how everything works, you don't and it's unlikely you ever will, so don't act like you do. Actions speak louder than words.
3) Blood, sweat and tears
You better be prepared to give this your all, I don't mean a weeks work, I don't mean a months work... I mean everything. I was doing work experience when I had nowhere to live, no money and no secure future. But I knew it would pay off in the end. If you’re lazy and/or want your life handed to you on a plate then this life isn't for you.
4) Turning Negative into Positive
To get anywhere in this industry you’re going to have to overcome a lot of frustrating obstacles. Chin up, bite your tongue and soldier on, when you’re at the top, then you can let the world know about all the crap you had to go through. Until then... don't watch everyone else's life, live your own.
5. P & Q's
In this industry there are a lot of rude and arrogant people, it's actually a trait that can get you quite far in the professional world. However unless you want to spend your life sat in a huge office by yourself whilst everyone talks about you behind your back then I suggest you get on your P's & Q's. I personally have no time for these people and I am unwilling to entertain these grotesque characters.
6. Passion
Don't be afraid to express your love and passion for music, art, print, fashion etc. A lot of people get far because they talk a lot of hype, let people know just how genuine and passionate you are about what you do.
7. Money
If money is your main objective then get a job at a bank. People like Weezy, Drake, Kanye, do not leave the studio most days, and trust me, they are not there simply because of the money. I'm sure most of them could have retired by now. They're doing this because they are creative, driven people who are using their gift to elevate their lives.
8. Watch and Learn
Study your craft; there are plenty of people who came before you. It's a pretty simple formula.
9. Handing down knowledge
So many people like to withhold information and refuse to let go the key to their doors. Once you have reached you desired spot then it's time to inform and educate others just like you.
10. Fun
Have fun with it, when it all constantly becomes a chore then it's time to move on. I spent my teenage years working in factories, cutting steel, building fruit machines, doing roofing, pouring pints etc. I've seen life on both sides, and trust me; this is the life for me.
