Re:Definition Meets... Scrufizzer

In the lead-up to his performance at RE:Definition tonight (BUY TICKETS HERE) we caught up with one of grime's new kids on the block, Scrufizzer to talk music…

Can you give me three words to describe your sound?

Energetic, creative and Fizzy!

What musical styles and artists have influenced your music?

I grew up listening to a lot of bashment, the essence of hip-hop. The people I really like are Andre 3000, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, Biggie - that old school feel. I also like a lot of singers as well, Mary J Blige, Amy Winehouse, R. Kelly. I still play their stuff today.

If you could remix any song, what would it be?

I’ll have to put some deep thought into that… Probably a Lauryn Hill song, To Zion.

What’s your favourite remix, ever?

My favourite remix would probably be the remix of Womack & Womack Footsteps by Lovestation.

If you could cover any song with any two artists on the ReDef line-up, what would it be, who with and why?

I’d probably do Look At Me Now by Chris Brown featuring Busta Rhymes and Lil’ Wayne and I’d use Ghetts and Abel Miller.

If you had to choose a song that describes your personality, what would it be?

I haven’t got a song that’s out at the moment, but I have a song called This Is Me and it’s basically about my life. No one’s heard it yet but the way it flows, the way it breaks down the content, the context in which I’m speaking, it really breaks me down as a person so I’d say that. It might come out if I feel happy about it. You always need to make sure you’ve got something down to a ‘T’.

What are your most memorable/favourite lyrics from a song?

Right now I’d say 6 Foot 7 Foot by Lil’ Wayne. There’s a line that says "Real G’s move in silence like Lasagne…” [laughs] I love that line.

What’s the most random idea for a song/lyric that you’ve thought up?

I can’t think of any particular lyrics right now but I made this crazy beat. I had the clap where the kick was and vice versa, and the snare in the middle of the kick with a guitar rift going over it and a trumpet at the end. It’s quite weird! And I had some jazzy singing with the melody of a slow song. It’s got a rock kinda vibe.

If you could refix a TV show theme tune, which programme would you choose?

I don’t want to say Eastenders because I know loads of people have said that! [Laughs] I’d probably say Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

If you had the chance to own any artist’s back catalogue, whose would it be?

Michael Jackson, definitely. He’s a big inspiration of mine and one of my favourite artists. I forgot to mention him!
