No, not Major Lazer. Major Tom's! Who is Major Tom? Well, “he’s” not really a person, and it’s not just one “thing”. Major Tom's is actually a recording studio and production house. But it’s what’s inside that we’re really interested in! Major Tom’s is the home of some of the UK’s hottest up & coming production and writing talents, Amir Amor, MNEK and The Elite.
You may not know the name, but you’ve certainly heard his songs. Described as the “new Paul Epworth” (responsible for Adele & Florence & The Machine) by The Guardian newspaper, he’s already had studio time with Plan B, Example, Maximo Park and Little Boots, recently putting his name to Oh My’s debut single ‘Dirty Dancer’. In more exciting news he’s part of a deal with Asylum – look out for the Rudimental tracks dropping soon.
Amor was always looking to build the epicenter of future pop creativity and after joining forces with 679 Records head honcho Nick Worthington two years ago, the dream’s fast becoming a reality. Having founded the Major Tom’s studio, Amir’s recently opened up their brainchild to like-minded producers and song-writers, with a shared ethos to develop forward-thinking artists, highlight new talent and promote originality, The Elite, MNEK and in-house engineer Ben Humphreys.
Consisting of producers Z-Dot and Dan Dare (previously known as Brutality) the pair have crafted hits for Wiley, Juelz Santana and Giggs. In 2011, Z Dot released the ‘Gangster’ EP with one of the years most popular grime instrumentals while Dare was making his name on the UK rap circuit. They’ve also worked with Marina & The Diamonds, Drake and Benny Banks amongst others and are rumoured to have some big publishing offers coming their way. Also tipped by RWD, our ears are well and truly tuned in.
At just 17, MNEK is one of the UK’s most exciting production and song writing hope. The south Londoner (and younger brother of rapper Bartoven) has already worked on songs for The Wanted, Oh My!, Duran Duran, Tinie Tempah and himself (check his release ‘If Truth Be Told’ out now on the Moshi Moshi label) and is believed to be working with the original Sugababes line-up on their new project. With Xenomania and Space Cowboy, he recently crafted the top 3 single ‘All Fired Up’ for The Saturdays. He is currently working with Future Records latest signee A*M*E on her debut album.
