How To Steal My Job: UD Creative

In a How To Steal My Job special leading up to Re:Definition on 7th July (BUY TICKETS HERE), we'll be talking to some of the key players taking part in the event to bring you their top industry tips.

Since rising through the ranks at Urban Development on education programmes like UDevelop+ Record Label Project, DJ Lubertz and Mi'ka are some of the familiar faces at UD HQ who have gone on to take their well deserved spots as senior UD Creatives. As a youngster, budding producer and DJ, Luberto aka Lubertz was taken under the wing of resident tutor and super producer, DJ Wonder to hone his skills on the decks and perfect his Logic mastery. Since, then Lubertz has gone on to host his own online DJ show and set up a PR company. Fellow DJ, Mi'ka started her Urban Development journey as a founding member of the UD Vocal Collective which boasts the likes of Talay Riley, J Warner and Labrinth as alumni. When Mi'ka is not harrassing us in the office she can be found co-hosting the Grimey Breakfast Show on Rinse FM with Scratcha DVA, providing BVs for the likes of Shola Ama, Omar and Ebru or spinning some house music. Now Lubertz and Mi'ka have decided to share their top ten tips for budding UD Creatives...

1) Have a creative mind

Don’t expect to be spoonfed everything. You have to bring something to the table.

2) Determination

If you’re not determined to achieve your goal, there’s not much point having a goal.

3) Consistency

Set your work rate and stick to it (or do better!)

4) Study the craft you want to master

If you want to be an events manager, producer etc, for example, put in the work! Practice, practice, practice!

5) Have love for what you do

If you don’t enjoy it, you’re better off getting a day job in a bank or retail.

6) Always prepare yourself

If you fail to prepare then you’re better off preparing to fail.

7) Don’t be a hot head

Be humble and calm. You'll always bump into someone in the industry than once. So mind what you say or do.

8) Be open minded

Who knows what path something may lead you to…just get stuck in.

9) Be able to work under pressure

Urban Development events can get really hectic, so you need to be really hands on and use initiative!

10) Organisation skills are essential

If you can’t organise your own life, how are you going to help manage others?
