How To Steal My Job: Producer
In a one week special leading up to our Industry Takeover All Dayer on 16th April, we'll be talking to some of the key players heading up the panels and masterclasses to bring you their top industry tips.
Since picking up some decks at a friend’s house in 2001, Wonder has
gone on to be one of the most renowned DJs and producers on the underground. As
a founding member of Roll Deep, Wonder collaborated with the likes of Wiley, Danny
Weed and a young Dizzee Rascal. Following the success of the now infamous grime
track, ‘What’ in 2004 which sold 3,500 copies, Wonder was picked by the now Mercury Award winning Dizzee Rascal as his
tour DJ supporting The Streets and Dizzee’s 2005 Showtime tour. Wonder still
DJs on Rinse Fm, and has worked with some of the biggest artists in the UK such
as Kano, Sway, Lethal B and Mr Hudson. Now Wonder has decided to share his top ten tips for budding producers...
1) Be Prepared
Make
sure you have a catalogue of tracks to present.
2) Think small, as well as big
Don’t
just aim for big artists. There’s plenty of unsigned & undiscovered talent
out there. You may be working with a future star.
3) Be accessible
Ensure
you have a strong online presence, and ensure your social networks are up to
date & on point!
4) Be proactive
Don’t
just wait around for remix requests. If you can, do your own, on your own.
5) Socialise/Network
If
you have opportunities to meet artists, take them.
6) Just ask!
Again, if you already have a good relationship with an artist, ask them ahead of everyone else.
7) Don’t follow the crowd
Try
not to be like every other sound that’s out there. Bring your own sound or make
it your own
8) Development is key
Spend
as much time as possible developing & crafting your own sound
9) Research
Make
sure you research the sound you’re trying to create. Have a real passion for
that sound
10) Attend as many events as possible
Attending events such as INDUSTRY TAKEOVER make networking a breeze.
