BRAND PROFILE: Stratford Rex

In the run up to Re:Definition on 7th July (which is all about celebrating east London), we'll be profiling some top brands and organisations that have the East End at their core. So pay close attention...

Who are the brand?

Stratford Rex

What do they do?

Opened in 1896 as the Borough Theatre and Opera House, the Rex was owned by Albert Fredericks, who also owned the Theatre Royal, Stratford and was designed by Frank Matcham. When it opened, it was one of the largest theatres in Greater London with seating for over 3,000. In its early years many well-known actors of the day played there, including Beerbohm Tree, Sir Henry Irving and Ellen Terry. The Fredericks family owned the Borough until 1933 when it became the Rex Cinema which then became a bingo hall in 1969 and later a disco venue.

Services they provide?

Before it's closure in 2010, the Rex was a hub for nightlife in Newham, hosting a wealth of shows, concerts and infamous club nights, the likes of Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Beenie Man, Mavado, Mr Vegas, Lady Saw, Bounty Killer and Buju Banton have graced its stage.

Why should people look out for them?

Newham Council are currently looking into new ways to incorporate the Stratford Rex into the 2012 Olympics celebrations.

Latest project?

While under redevelopment, the Stratford Rex acts as a backdrop to the new Stratford High Street DLR station.
