HOW TO STEAL MY JOB: Blogger
Regarded by many as one of the primary sources for hip hop in terms of content and consistency, Sumit Sharma is the one-man team behind The Hip Hop Chronicle. Having interviewed the likes of Method Man, Wiz Khalifa, Kanye West, Nas and many more, Sumit has been on his grind over the past three years gaining a respectable place in the rap scene. We asked Sumit to share his ten top tips on how to be a successful blogger…
1)
Be Original
With some many blogs and websites out there dedicated to a music genre, it is
very important to put a new spin on things. Stand out from the crowd. Be
interesting.
2) Consistency
This is key. The world of entertainment is constantly changing. You have to be
on top on things for people to want to come visit your site. If you put a brand
new Jay-Z track 12 hours after it was released, nobody is going to visit your
outlet. Online consumers want the content quick. If you are filming at a
concert, put the footage out as soon as possible. In other words; you snooze,
you lose.
3) Content
Whether it is editorials, video content or interviews, create your own content.
There is a saying, "Content is King" and there is a reason for that.
4) Writing Skills
We all make spelling and grammatical mistakes but double check your work. U dnt
want 2b makin mistakes like dis.
5) Social Media
Get yourselves a Twitter and Facebook account. A great way to attract new
readers is through social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook. Be a
presence on social media.
6) Passion
You have to be passionate about the genre of music you are reporting on. Don't
just think about whether you can make money from this or see it as a chance to
meet an artist. See your job as providing a platform for these artists and make
a valuable contribution. The passion you have for the music will push you
through the good times and the bad.
7) Professionalism
Whenever you meet anyone, email them or talk to them on the phone, you are representing your brand. People like to work with those who they like and get on with. If you are not professional, expect to be out in the cold with listening sessions and interviews.
8) Follow Your Heart
If you are passionate, consistent and know the music, don't be afraid to think
outside the box. Think ideas through, see if it has the legs to run, then
sprint 100 meters and win gold!
9) Relationships
This whole industry is about who you know and the relationships you have with
them. Build on those contacts you make and be respectful of their time.
10) Have Fun
Enjoy the work that you do. It's not a glamorous lifestyle but it is a whole
lot of fun. If you want to be successful then this is vital.
