How To Steal My Job: Producer
In a three week special leading up to our Industry Takeover All Dayer on 16th April, we'll be talking to some of the key players heading up the panels and masterclasses to bring you their top industry tips.
Having started out his career in 2003 under the name of DJ Silencer, East London producer and Rinse FM DJ, Teddy Music is one of the most sort after beatmakers in grime. A member of the Pitch Controllers collective, Teddy boasts a discography that includes Pow 2011, World War 4, Dirtbag and Final Lap. To date, Teddy has worked with the likes of N-Dubz, JME, Tempa T, P Money, Aggro Santos, Stutta, Tinchy Stryder and Lethal Bizzle to name a few. So it’s only right that Teddy Music gives you budding producers his top ten tips on how to steal his job...
1) Be Yourself
Don’t be afraid to show your personality in what you do, as a producer it’s part of selling yourself, so don’t feel you have to act a certain way.
2) Find a program you’re comfortable with
I use FL Studio 9 but I’d recommend mastering Logic or Cubase because you can create a more advanced sound.
3) Be unique and get your own style
Don’t try and be like other producers out there or use their sounds because people won’t listen to your music. If they wanted the other producers’ work, they’d just go there instead.
4) Make sure you’ve got the right plugins and effects
Invest in getting this right as they’ll make your music sound professional.
5) Keep your energy levels up
If you’re fully energised, you can get on with what you have to do. I always make sure I have a bottle of drink beside me when I work.
6) Research the industry
Make time to find out important information about the industry, e.g contracts, publishing etc. A good starting point is a book by Donald S. Passman called All You Need to Know About the Music Business.
7) Email you music to as many DJs as possible
Don’t just concentrate on getting the attention of one DJ. Every DJ has the potential to gain you one extra fan so don’t overlook anyone.
8) Promote your music on social networking websites
There’s no excuse, Facebook, Twitter, blog. They’re easy to use, they’re free and you can reach a lot of people.
9) Keep your ears and eyes open
Get familiar with the latest news in the music scene you’re working in. Make sure you’re aware of who the up and coming artists and producers are as well as the more established ones.
10) Network!
Go to events, get yourself out there and network with people, artists, DJs, producers and managers.
